What is a nickname symbol?
A nickname symbol is a single Unicode character, or a short string of them, added to a name for decoration. It is plain text, not an image, so it copies and pastes like a letter into an Instagram name, a TikTok display name or a WhatsApp profile. Most come from symbol blocks such as Dingbats and Miscellaneous Symbols; many popular ones are borrowed letters from other scripts: ꧁꧂ is Javanese, ࿐ and ༒ are Tibetan, ツ is Japanese katakana.
That borrowing explains a lot. ʚ and ɞ are phonetic letters that happen to look like wings; ৎ is a Bengali consonant that looks like a small bow; ღ is a Georgian letter that looks like a heart. Stylish letters such as 𝓐𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓿 are a different thing: they replace the letters of the name itself, and the SnapNick nickname generator at the top of this page makes those. Symbols sit around the letters.
What is inside a decorated name?
Take a decorated name from the SnapNick library, ㅤ‼️Ꭾʀɪ፝֟ɴᴄᴇㅤᥫ᭡. It looks like the word Prince with a line under it, but it is 14 separate code points from 10 Unicode blocks. The line is two combining marks, one Ethiopic and one Hebrew, stacked under the letter ɪ; the gaps are HANGUL FILLER, a character that looks empty.

Reading a name this way tells you what to copy when you want only one part of it, and why a game or app might refuse it: many name fields accept letters but strip combining marks or fillers.
Heart and coquette symbols
Heart and coquette symbols are the soft marks — ♡, ❥, ꨄ, 𝜗𝜚, ʚɞ and the 🎀 bow — that people put around a name to make it sweet rather than bold. Single hearts come first; the coquette combos below mix bows, pearls and sparkles and suit a bio or a girl’s display name.
Single heart symbols ♥
The playing-card ♥ and the dingbat ❤ are the classic hearts, and ❥ in the top grid is a heart turned into a bullet. ෆ, a Sinhala letter, reads as a soft heart. The long lines built from ﮩ٨ـ look like a heartbeat on a monitor.
Coquette bows and heart combos 🎀
These combos come ready-made; paste one before or after a name. A few use newer characters that older phones show as boxes, so check the name in the app before you save it.
Name frames ꧁ ꧂ and brackets
A name frame is a pair of symbols that opens and closes a name, such as ꧁ ꧂, 『 』 or 𓆩 𓆪, so the name looks like a title. Copy both halves, or take a finished frame from the second list and type your name in the gap.
Bracket and frame symbols ꧁꧂
Brackets come in left and right pairs, so copy both halves. ꧁꧂ are Javanese rerenggan, marks that open and close a title in Javanese writing; 『』 and 「」 are Japanese quotation brackets; ⟬⟭ are mathematical tortoise-shell brackets.

Which nickname symbols are there, by shape?
Nickname symbols fall into about a dozen shapes: hearts, stars, crowns, arrows, wings, brackets, dividers, tiny sparkle dots, flowers, sky and weather, dark crosses and skulls, and music notes. Each group below starts with single characters and ends with ready combinations taken from the SnapNick symbol library.

Star and sparkle symbols ✩
Dingbats has stars with four to twelve points; ⭒ is a small white star that sits neatly after a short name. Sparkle strings like ⋆.˚⭒⋆ mix stars with ˚ and . for a twinkling look.
Crown and royal symbols ♔
Unicode’s older symbol blocks have no crown, so people borrow chess pieces: ♔ and ♚ are kings, ♕ and ♛ are queens, and ♜ ♞ ♝ are rook, knight and bishop. 👑 is the emoji crown, and ⚜ the fleur-de-lis adds a royal crest.
Arrow symbols ➶
Feathered arrows ➶ ➷ ➸ look like Cupid’s arrow and suit a name that is “pointing” somewhere; hooked arrows such as ↳ and ╰┈➤ are used to start a second line in a bio.
Wing, feather and angel symbols 𓆩𓆪
𓆩 and 𓆪 are Egyptian hieroglyphs L006 and L006A, and the pair reads as two wings around a name. ໒꒱ and ꒰ঌ build wings from Lao, Yi and Bengali characters.
Divider and line symbols ─୨୧─
Dividers are long strings that separate a name from a bio line, or two parts of a profile. They are wide, so they suit a bio or a status better than a name field.
Faint dots and sparkle separators ˚₊‧
These are the tiny marks that make a name look like it is glittering: ˚ (ring above), ₊ (subscript plus), ‧ (hyphenation point). They look almost invisible at small sizes but are real characters, so they never paste as blank.
Flower and butterfly symbols ❃
Most “flower” dingbats are officially named asterisks: ❃ is HEAVY TEARDROP-SPOKED PINWHEEL ASTERISK. 𑁍 is a lotus punctuation mark from the ancient Brahmi script, and ཐིཋྀ is a Tibetan pair that looks like a butterfly. For soft names to put next to them, see the cute nicknames from food, animals and sky.
Moon, sun and weather symbols ☼
☼ and ☀ are suns, ☁ and ☂ are cloud and umbrella, ❄ a snowflake and ☄ a comet. Crescent moons ☾ ☽ appear inside many of the combinations below.
Cross, dagger, skull and lightning symbols †
† is the dagger used for footnotes, ⸸ is a turned dagger popular in gothic names, ♱ is the East Syriac cross, and Ϟ is the Greek letter koppa, which looks like a lightning bolt. Pair these with the names on the attitude nicknames list, and keep in mind that crosses are religious symbols for many people.
Music note symbols ♫
♪ ♫ ♬ are eighth and sixteenth notes and 𝄞 is the treble clef, from the Musical Symbols block added in Unicode 3.1.
Symbols that end a name シ
Some symbols are almost always placed after a name, like a signature. シ and ツ are Japanese katakana that look like smiling faces, 乡 and 彡 are Chinese characters (乡 means village; 彡 is the “hair” radical), and 〆 is a Japanese closing mark.
Which symbols suit a boy’s or a girl’s name?
Sharp or bold shapes such as ꧁༒꧂, ⚔, ☠, ✞ and feathered arrows suit a strong boy’s name; soft shapes such as ♡, ʚɞ, ୨୧, ৎ and flowers suit a sweet girl’s name. That is a habit, not a rule: every frame below works for any name.

Names styled by the SnapNick generator
These came out of the generator on this page on 16 September 2026: each one combines stylish letters with a symbol from the groups above.
Decorated names people already use
These arrive ready-made in the SnapNick library. Most use the combining-mark underline and HANGUL FILLER gaps explained earlier, so paste them where you can check how they look first.
What are the official Unicode names and codes of nickname symbols?
Every nickname symbol has a fixed code (like U+2605) and an official name (like BLACK STAR) set by the Unicode Consortium. The table lists 47 common ones, with the block they live in and the Unicode version that added them, taken from the Unicode 18.0 data files UnicodeData.txt, Blocks.txt and DerivedAge.txt.

How to use the codes: search the U+ number on the Unicode code charts to see the reference glyph, or type it into a symbol picker. The years come from Unicode’s publication dates. The “added in” column matters for older phones: the newer the version, the more likely an old device shows an empty box instead of the symbol.
Which kaomoji and emoji combos go with name symbols?
Kaomoji are faces built from text characters, and emoji combos mix colour emoji with symbols like ˚ and ⋆. Both sit well after a framed name or in the line under it. The kaomoji here reuse the same wing, bow and star shapes as the symbol groups above.

How do you add symbols to your nickname?
To add symbols to a nickname, copy a symbol from this page, paste it before and after your name with a space on each side, and check the result in the app before saving. With the SnapNick generator the symbols are added for you and it takes about ten seconds.
- Pick a shape that matches the mood you want: hearts and flowers for soft, crowns for royal, daggers and skulls for attitude.
- Tap a single symbol or a pair of brackets above; it is copied at once.
- Paste it into the name field, type your name, then paste the closing symbol. Keep one space between symbol and name so neither gets clipped.
- Or type your name into the generator at the top of the page and tap a styled result that already has a symbol.
- Look at the preview. If you see an empty box, swap that symbol for an older one from the Unicode table.
On a phone you cannot type most of these from the keyboard, so copy and paste is the practical way.
Where do nickname symbols work, and why do some show as a box?
Nickname symbols work wherever an app accepts free text in a display name: WhatsApp profile names, Instagram’s Name field, TikTok display names and most chat nicknames. They usually fail in usernames and handles, which on most apps are limited to letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks.
- Instagram: symbols belong in the Name field, not the username. The Instagram Help Center suggests periods, numbers or underscores when a username is taken, but it does not publish a full list of the characters a username may use. The Instagram nicknames guide covers the difference between the two fields.
- WhatsApp: the profile name is limited to 25 characters, according to the WhatsApp Help Center. It does not say how it counts a symbol, so use the UTF-16 column below as the safe number.
- Games: name fields in games often filter decorative characters, and the rules change with updates. Free Fire, for example, stopped accepting the blank-looking U+3164 HANGUL FILLER from its OB43 update. Try a name in the game before you build a clan identity around it.
| Sample | Text | Code points | UTF-16 units | UTF-8 bytes | Within 25 UTF-16 units? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain name | Aarav | 5 | 5 | 5 | yes |
| Heart frame | ♡ Aarav ♡ | 9 | 9 | 13 | yes |
| Javanese frame | ꧁ Aarav ꧂ | 9 | 9 | 13 | yes |
| Hieroglyph wings | 𓆩 Kabir 𓆪 | 9 | 11 | 15 | yes |
| Double frame | ꧁༒ Rahul ༒꧂ | 11 | 11 | 19 | yes |
| Script letters + frame | 『𝓐𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓿』 | 7 | 12 | 26 | yes |
| Double-struck + stars | ⋆ 𝔸𝕒𝕣𝕒𝕧 ⋆ | 9 | 14 | 28 | yes |
| Decorated library name | ㅤ‼️Ꭾʀɪ፝֟ɴᴄᴇㅤᥫ᭡ | 14 | 14 | 38 | yes |
| Divider | ∘₊✧────✧₊∘ | 10 | 10 | 30 | yes |
Two things show up in the numbers. Symbols outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, such as the hieroglyph wings 𓆩𓆪 and the treble clef 𝄞, count as two UTF-16 units each, so a short name in wings costs more than it looks. And stylish letters count double too, which is why a styled name fills a limit faster than the same name with plain letters and a symbol.
An empty box or a question mark means the device has no font for that character; the symbol itself is fine. It happens most with newer additions (see the “added in” column) and with rare scripts. Your friend on a newer phone may see it correctly, but if the name is for a public profile, pick a symbol that shows on your own device too.

Questions people ask about nickname symbols
What is a nickname symbol?
A nickname symbol is a Unicode character such as ♡, ★, ♛ or ꧁꧂ that you add before, after or around a name for decoration. It is text, not an image, so it copies and pastes into apps like any letter.
What are cool symbols for usernames?
Handles on most apps only accept letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so symbols usually fail there. For a display name, cool picks are ꧁༒꧂, ☠, ⸸, ⚡, ➳ and ♛; for the handle itself, use a period or underscore instead.
What is a stylish name with emoji like 🦋⃟ for Instagram?
It is a name decorated with an emoji followed by a combining enclosing mark, such as 🦋 plus U+20DF COMBINING ENCLOSING DIAMOND, which draws a frame around the emoji. Put it in the Instagram Name field and keep it out of the username.
How can I make my nickname with symbols?
Type your name into the SnapNick generator and tap a result, or copy a pair of symbols from this page and paste one on each side of your name with a space between them, for example ꧁ Aarav ꧂ or ʚ Priya ɞ.
Why do some name symbols show as a box?
A box means the phone or computer has no font for that character. The text is not broken; older devices simply lack glyphs for newer Unicode additions and rare scripts. Choose a symbol from an older Unicode version if many people need to see it.
What does ꧁꧂ mean in a name?
꧁ and ꧂ are JAVANESE LEFT RERENGGAN (U+A9C1) and JAVANESE RIGHT RERENGGAN (U+A9C2), marks that open and close a title in Javanese script. In nicknames they are used purely as a decorative frame.
How many characters does a symbol take?
Most symbols are one code point. Symbols above U+FFFF, such as 𓆩, 𓆪 and 𝄞, take two UTF-16 units, and some apps count length in UTF-16 units. ꧁ Aarav ꧂ is 9 code points and 9 UTF-16 units; 𓆩 Kabir 𓆪 is 9 code points but 11 units.
Type a keyword and get styled variants you can copy straight into your profile.
