What is a clan name, and how is it different from a clan tag?
A clan name is the full name of a group that plays together, such as Midnight Monarchs, while a clan tag is its 2–4 character abbreviation, such as MM, that sits beside each member’s own name. The name is for introductions and banners; the tag is what people actually read in a lobby, a scoreboard or a bracket.
Squad name and team name mean nearly the same thing. “Clan” and “guild” are the words online games use for a standing group, “squad” is the usual word for the three to five friends who queue together, and “team” covers everything else: a gully cricket side, a five-a-side football group, a college fest entry, a quiz trio or a hackathon team. Mobile games like PUBG Mobile made “clan” and “squad” everyday words in India, but every idea on this page works outside any one game.
A team name also sits apart from your own name. Your username or display name belongs to you, the team name belongs to everyone, and the tag links the two. If you are naming a friends’ group chat rather than a team that competes, the friends group names page is sorted for that job.
How do you make a 2–4 letter clan tag?
To make a clan tag, take the initials of a two- or three-word clan name, or strip the vowels from a one-word name, and stop at 2–4 capital letters. Midnight Monarchs becomes MM, Zero Ping Club becomes ZPC and Vortex becomes VRTX. Then say it out loud and check it does not spell anything awkward.
- Start from the full name. Pick the clan name first; a tag invented on its own rarely means anything to the team.
- Choose a method. Initials suit names of two or three words. Dropping vowels or keeping consonants suits one-word names. A first syllable (KAI from Kairos) works when it sounds good alone.
- Trim to 2–4 characters. Two letters feel like a monogram, three read like a sports abbreviation, four let a short word survive whole (LYNX).
- Read it three ways. Say it aloud, read it backwards, and search it. Initials can spell a rude word, a political party or a real club by accident.
- Avoid look-alike characters. O and 0, I and 1, S and 5 get confused when an organiser types your tag into a sheet.
| Clan or team name | Method | Tag | Characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight Monarchs | Initials | MM | 2 |
| Crimson Comets | Initials | CC | 2 |
| Zero Ping Club | Initials | ZPC | 3 |
| Tape Ball Titans | Initials | TBT | 3 |
| Monsoon FC | First letter + suffix | MFC | 3 |
| Solar Flare Six | Initials + number | SF6 | 3 |
| Cinder | First three consonants | CND | 3 |
| Garuda | Consonants only | GRD | 3 |
| Kairos | First syllable | KAI | 3 |
| Vortex | Drop the vowels | VRTX | 4 |
| Tundra | Drop the vowels | TNDR | 4 |
| Null Pointers | Initial + consonants | NPTR | 4 |
| Lynx | Whole word (already 4) | LYNX | 4 |
| Know-It-Owls | Initials of each part | KIO | 3 |
The same tags with a frame, ready to copy. Brackets and single symbols make a tag stand out next to a name, but keep the letters plain if an organiser has to type it.

What kind of name and tag suits each type of team?
The right team name depends on where it will be seen. A clan tag in an online lobby has to be tiny, a cricket team name is shouted across a ground, and a quiz team name is read out by a host. This table is our editorial guide, based on where each name appears, not on any rulebook.
| Team type | Suggested tag | Name style that works | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online gaming clan | 2–4 capitals | Epic two-word name; styled letters fine for display | Midnight Monarchs [MM] |
| Casual squad of friends | Optional, 3 letters | Funny, self-mocking | Low Battery Squad |
| E-sports-style tournament team | 3–4 plain capitals | One strong word that works as a brand | Tundra (TNDR) |
| Gully or corporate cricket | None; “XI” as a suffix | Cricket term + alliteration | Tape Ball Titans |
| Football or futsal | “FC” as a suffix | Place, weather or football term | Monsoon FC |
| College fest team | 3–4 letters for the score sheet | Campus joke kept clean for judges | Last Bench Legion |
| Quiz team | None | Pun that is easy to read aloud | Know-It-Owls |
| Hackathon team | Short lowercase handle | Coding in-joke | Null Pointers |
Two rules run through every row: the more strangers will read the name, the plainer it should be, and the smaller the space it appears in, the more the tag matters.
Best clan names for gaming squads
The best clan names are two words, sound confident and do not depend on a single game: Midnight Monarchs, Neon Nomads and Aurora Wolves work in any shooter, battle royale or strategy game. Pick one that still sounds right if the squad switches games next year.
Cool and epic clan names
One-word clan names
One-word names are the e-sports style: short, easy to put on a jersey, and they turn into a tag with no effort. Vayu (wind), Agni (fire) and Garuda (the eagle of Indian myth) give a desi squad a name nobody else in the lobby has.
Funny squad names
Funny squad names suit friends who lose as often as they win. The joke works best when it is about the squad itself — the lag, the dinner call, the one player always on low battery — rather than about opponents.
Hinglish squad names
Josh is energy, dhamaal is fun chaos, yodha is a warrior, toofan is a storm and mauka is a chance. Mixed with English they make squad names that sound like how Indian teams actually talk on voice chat.
Guild names for Free Fire and BGMI squads
Battle royale guilds name themselves after the game itself — its maps, its items and the moments everyone chases. These borrow from Free Fire (Bermuda, Purgatory, Kalahari, the Gloo Wall, the Booyah) and BGMI (Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Vikendi, Livik, the chicken dinner), so other players get the reference at a glance.
Esports and scrim team names
Scrim and tournament teams need a name that sounds competitive on a bracket and still reads cleanly when a caster says it out loud. Gaming vocabulary — ping, patch, respawn, lobby — does that job without tying you to one game.
Dark and mysterious clan names
Dark clan names work for role-play servers, horror games and any squad that prefers a quiet, serious image over a loud one. Keep them short: two words, one of them a colour, a time of night or a silence.
Squad names for a group of friends
A friends squad name is less about winning and more about the shared joke — the canteen, the hostel, the plan that always gets cancelled. These suit a gaming group made of college friends as much as the group chat itself.
Team names for cricket, football and other sports
Good sports team names borrow a term from the game itself: cricket names use boundary, yorker or powerplay, football names use nutmeg, turf or clean sheet. The sport word tells everyone what you play before they see a ball.

Cricket team names
Tape ball, tennis ball and Sunday gully cricket all get their own names here, because a society team and a corporate league side want different tones.
Football and futsal team names
Kabaddi, badminton, basketball and more
A raid, a super tackle and a do-or-die raid are kabaddi terms; shuttle, net and drop shot come from badminton. Checkmate Knights is for the chess club that wants a team name too.
Team names for college fests, quizzes and hackathons
Team names for college events should be clever but clean, because a teacher, a judge or a sponsor will read them out. A pun on the event itself — a buzzer, a lifeline, a merge conflict — lands better than a pun on someone.
College fest team names
Quiz team names
Pass and pounce is the bonus format many Indian college quizzes use, so a team named after it tells the quizmaster you know the game.
Hackathon and coding team names
Hackathon registration forms often end up as a repository name or a folder too, so a name that also works as a lowercase handle (null-pointers, merge-conflict) saves a step.
How do you make a stylish clan name?
You make a stylish clan name by typing the plain name into the SnapNick nickname generator at the top of this page, copying a styled version and pasting it where your team name goes. It turns each letter into a decorative Unicode letter and can add a frame symbol.
- Choose the plain clan, squad or team name from the lists above.
- Type it into the generator and tap Generate.
- Tap the style you like; it is copied at once.
- Paste it into the team name field, then check it on another player’s screen before the whole squad adopts it.
The sets below are real generator output from 16 September 2026.
Clan, styled
Squad, styled
Titans, styled
NOVA, styled
Once the team has a name, members usually want matching names of their own; the attitude nicknames list is where most squad players start.
How long is a styled clan tag really?
A styled clan tag is often twice as long as it looks. We counted the tag LYNX in eleven styles with code on 16 September 2026: plain LYNX is 4 characters, but math bold, double-struck and negative squared letters each take 2 UTF-16 units per letter, so the same four letters count as 7 or 8.
| Tag | Style | Code points | UTF-16 units | UTF-8 bytes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LYNX | plain capitals | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| [LYNX] | square brackets | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| 【LYNX】 | full-width lenticular brackets | 6 | 6 | 10 |
| ꧁LYNX꧂ | Javanese ornaments | 6 | 6 | 10 |
| ʟʏɴx | small capitals | 4 | 4 | 7 |
| 𝐋𝐘𝐍𝐗 | math bold | 4 | 8 | 16 |
| 𝕃𝕐ℕ𝕏 | double-struck (ℕ is an older character) | 4 | 7 | 15 |
| 🅻🆈🅽🆇 | negative squared letters | 4 | 8 | 16 |
| LYNX | full-width letters | 4 | 4 | 12 |
| LYNX ⚡︎ | plain + text-style bolt | 7 | 7 | 11 |
| 𓃮 LYNX | plain + hieroglyph | 6 | 7 | 9 |
Three things the table shows. Small capitals and full-width letters stay at one unit each, so they are the cheapest way to style a tag. Double-struck is uneven — ℕ is an older character, so 𝕃𝕐ℕ𝕏 is 7 units, not 8. And a frame adds its own count: 【LYNX】 is 6 code points before any styling.
Every game and app sets its own name length and decides whether it accepts symbols at all, and those rules change between updates. We do not quote a limit we cannot check, so treat the table as a way to compare styles and test your final tag in the rename screen before you announce it. For a team registration form, plain capitals are the safe choice.
Symbols, emoji and kaomoji for team names
One symbol before or after a clan name marks it as a team; more than two starts to look like clutter. Tap any cell to copy it.
Badge and crest symbols
Lightning, lion and star symbols

Cricket, football and celebration emoji
Victory kaomoji
Team and cheering kaomoji
The ones with two faces joined by 人 show two teammates side by side, which suits a squad better than a lone smiley.
Older phones can show a rare symbol as an empty box. Send the finished name to a teammate first and check it looks right on their screen.
Which clan and team names should you avoid?
Avoid team names built on real violence, real weapons, hate or someone else’s identity. They get reported, renamed by moderators or rejected by event organisers, and they age badly once the squad grows up.
- Real weapons and real attacks. Names about guns, bombs or real wars read very differently to a stranger than to your squad. Myth and weather — Garuda, Tempest, Toofan — give the same power without the problem.
- Hate and put-downs. Anything aimed at a religion, caste, region, gender or disability, even as a joke.
- Accidental acronyms. A harmless name can make a rude or political tag. Check the initials before you settle.
- Real teams, brands and people. Copying an IPL franchise, a football club or a pro e-sports organisation causes confusion and can break event rules.
- Inside jokes about one member. A name that mocks one player stops being funny for that player the first time it is on a scoreboard.

Questions about clan, squad and team names
What is a good clan name?
A good clan name is two words, easy to say and not tied to one game — Midnight Monarchs, Neon Nomads or Aurora Wolves. It should also shorten into a clean 2–4 letter tag, such as MM for Midnight Monarchs.
What is a cool 4-letter clan tag?
Cool 4-letter clan tags include LYNX, VRTX (Vortex without vowels), TNDR (Tundra) and NPTR (Null Pointers). Four letters let a short word stay whole or keep the consonants of a longer one.
What is a good 3-letter clan name?
Good 3-letter clan tags are initials or consonant clips: ZPC for Zero Ping Club, CND for Cinder, KAI for Kairos and GRD for Garuda. Say the three letters aloud to make sure they do not spell anything awkward.
What is a good squad name?
A good squad name fits the squad's mood. Serious squads pick names like Storm Circuit or Echo Titans; friends who play for fun pick names like Low Battery Squad, AFK Again or One More Match.
What's a good team name for cricket?
Cricket team names work best with a cricket term: Tape Ball Titans, Powerplay Pirates, Yorker Kings, Boundary Bandits or Sunday Gully XI. Adding XI makes any name sound like a cricket side.
What is a unique team name?
A unique team name mixes two things nobody pairs: a place or habit with a sport or game term, like Monsoon FC, Garam Chai Gamers or Mind the Gap Year. Search it once to check another team is not already using it.
How do I put symbols in my clan name?
Type the clan name into the SnapNick generator, copy a styled version, then add one symbol from this page before or after it. Styled letters can count double, so test the final name in the app's rename screen.
